"In an art world so readily dominated and vulgarised by the cult of gesture and posing, McClure is an artist who is genuinely more interested in his subjects than he is in himself."

Portrait FAQ's

Do you take private commissions?

Absolutely! Official portraits and family heirlooms, immortalising a client or preserving a loved-one's living presence. It is an honour to be asked to paint someone for posterity and every subject brings unique expressive possibilities.

Do you work from photos or from life?

My preference is to work entirely from life. My growing body of work is a record of real, shared human encounters. On those rare occasions when live sittings are not practical (e.g. posthumous portraits or very young sitters) I will achieve a lifelike result using photo references.

How long does a portrait take?

Timing can be anything from around five hours to five days, depending on the size and complexity. All logistical details are discussed and agreed in advance.

Typical prices?

50x40cm £2500

70x60cm £5000

120x80cm £10,000

(Framing is not included, but I'm happy to advise.)

Where do you work?

I have a spacious portrait studio in the picturesque town of Kirkcudbright, Scotland. I’m also happy travelling to paint subjects at home, work or outdoor settings. I have my own campervan accommodation for work around The UK and beyond.

Ewan has captured mum's image and personality perfectly and our family are delighted with the finished portrait. As mum is living with dementia it is extra special. Ewan worked with mum with great sensitivity and was thoughtful to her illness as we planned the process. Highly professional in approach and such a talented artist - we can recommend Ewan for the most beautiful work.
